Equipment

When working with field recording, sound design, composition and installations, invariably the subject turns to what gear one uses. So, here is a list of all the different equipment I use for various applications.

Software

For editing, composition, sound design and most other applications, Reaper is always my go-to. Superior to pretty much everything else. Along with a gazillion different plugins, of course.

But I also use Max, Pd, SuperCollider, Kyma, MetaSynth, iZotope RX Advanced, and the list goes on…

The command line tool SoX is probably the most versatile tool in my aresenal.

Microphones

Recording devices

Currently, I use a Sound Devices MixPre 10T for most recording application, with the addition of a Sound Decives MixPre portable 2-channel amplifier. The 10T has 8 XLR-inputs with +48v, making it very flexible for most recording situations, despite the preamps being a lower quality then the Sound Devices units I’ve had in the past.

When travelling, I also use a Zoom H2N, a small portable recording device. This is prefect for long durational recordings, where it will record 15 hours straight with a 32Gb SD-card and a fresh set of AA-batteries.

Some of my favourite devices for deploying long-term in the field is the AudioMoth by Open Acoustic Devices.

Synths

I was a modular synth user for a long time, “user” being used in the direction of eurocrack. Saying that, my large 15v Frac-rack system was no less crack than eurorack… However, I sold off the modular some years ago and rely on a series of different soft-synths. Some hardware is still in use, like the Clavia Nord MicroModular and G2, along with bC9 and bC16 by Chimeria Synthesis. My studio is also full of different synths and circuit bent instruments I’ve built over the years.

Speakers

Next to the wave field synthesis setup detailed here, I primarily use Genelec 8020Ds in the studio.
